What is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)?

By Kenny | December 23, 2007

Search engines have become a critical part of the online marketing mix, it is one of the primary ways that Internet users find information, products and services online. The majority of most website traffic is referred by search engines, such as Google and Yahoo and NineMSN.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the process to increase the visibility of your website in the natural (organic) listing results pages of the major search engines, in order to drive more targeted, qualified traffic to your web site. These drive roughly 3-10 times more traffic and are extremely cost effective.

Submitting to search engines is only part of the challenge of getting good search engine positioning. It’s also important to prepare a website through “search engine optimisation.”

Search engine optimisation means ensuring that your web pages are accessible to search engines and are focused in ways that help improve the chances they will be found.

However, there are no, and can not be, guarantees for placement at a specific position. In fact, there are not any “search engine secrets” that will guarantee a top listing. - what position you get is only partially up to the SEO - the search engine makes the rules.
